Friend Favorites

One of my good friends is moving this tomorrow, so in honor of my food loving friend’s departure. I’ve compiled a list of favorites categorized from cheap to brunch to dessert from someone who loves food more than me. I must say that I’ve eaten some of my favorite meals with this friend, but often times I find myself fighting to get a bite. Fatty’s gotta eat.

Origin Natural Food: A Natural Spin on Food and Coffee

Often times I’ve thought to myself, I wish there was a coffee shop where I could sit down, get something healthy to eat and do my work. Well, my prayers have been answered now that Origin Natural Food is open on McKinney Avenue.

As soon as I walked in, I knew I was going to feel at home with the friendly people, the inviting atmosphere, the black and white photos of Dallas landmarks adorning the walls and even better the refrigerators full of healthy food options. Yes you heard me…healthy food! Finally, somewhere to eat healthy and drink coffee– two of my favorite things in the world!! (and even better their coffee is from Oakcliff Coffee Roasters) The idea behind Origin Natural Food is really something special, with their goal being to promote a healthy lifestyle, by eating REAL food.  Forget about all those nasty preservatives and fake food imitations because their food, prepared by their Chef Jeff Smith, is gluten free, dairy free, preservative free, grass-fed and free range.  They only use coconut oil and olive oil, all sauces are made of pureed vegetables and fruits. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner to take away or to eat in, as you sip on a warm cup of coffee.

Each item on the menu is original, from the No Pasta, Pasta made of zucchini noodles, an heirloom tomato reduction and vegetable medley to the Pumpkin Crusted Salmon. For breakfast, pick up an Origin Breakfast– a grilled portobello with, bacon wrapped asparagus, sliced Tomato and a poached egg with hollandaise.  Or get my favorite, Jess’ Special.  Just think to yourself…egg whites, cinnamon, nutmeg, almond butter and banana all blended together into an amazing breakfast concoction like you have never tasted before.  You can taste the delicious banana and almond butter with every bite and you would never even believe that you are eating egg whites.  It may sound a bit strange but it is unbelievably good. I had to grab one as  I sat there and heard how much everyone else in the room was raving about it.

Looking to pick up a salad? They also offer an assortment of salads like a Kale salad with apples, dried cranberries, pecans and a sugar free lemon vinaigrette dressing that tastes like lemonade. YUM! I mean lets be real, we all know what makes a salad good—the dressing—and this one is out of this world! If this isn’t enough to make you want to try Origin Natural Food, I don’t know what is– just get yourself on over and enjoy. I did.

Torchy’s Tacos

Austin-based, Torchy’s Tacos puts a twist on your traditional taco and will leave you speechless. With locations off of Forest Rd. and University Blvd., Torchy’s serves up your traditional fajita favorites and also offers funky originals like the Mr. Pink made with Guajillo seared Ahi tuna, cabbage, cilantro, queso fresco, a wedge of lime and chipotle sauce.

One requirement when venturing over to Torchy’s is to order some queso. Why you ask? Because a taco adventure is not complete without some queso. Torchy’s Green Chile Queso is  a bowl of melted cheesy goodness with guacamole, queso fresco (more less- melted cheese), cilantro & Diablo sauce (Torchy’s signature hot sauce). It is spicy, creamy and balanced with the cilantro and guacamole. I could probably take on a whole bowl and still be hungry for more. It is that good!

Here are my two go-to items:

1. Green Chile Pork Taco- Slow-roasted pork carnitas simmered with green chiles and topped with queso fresco, cilantro, onions with tomatillo salsa.

2. Chicken Fajita-Tender marinated & grilled chicken breast with grilled onions and peppers, cheese & pico de gallo.

Cafe Brazil

Recently, I sampled Cafe Brazil‘s fall menu and was pleasantly surprised, as my taste buds were flooded with the taste of pumpkin pancakes and cheesecake, holiday brew coffee and the blend of savory & spicy, in their Cranberry-Jalapeno Chutney Pork Chop.  Yeah! You heard me a pork chop! It was great! The sauce was sweet and spicy, the pork was perfectly cooked and the fried sweet potatoes on the side were perfectly cooked and the perfect item to dip in the leftover sauce.

These famous fall favorites at Cafe Brazil are famous for a reason and eating is believing when you step into one of their many locations around Dallas. Now I had never been to Cafe Brazil before, but obviously had heard rantings and ravings about their cinnamon-pumpkin pancakes so my expectations were high. Well, these babies were definitely worth the compliments, they were fluffy, full of cinnamon and pumpkin flavor (but not too full) and covered with the most delicious cinnamon-butter.  One of their other seasonal items featured is the Chai Oatmeal, it tasted like a blend between a chai tea latte and oatmeal. If you like those two items, there is no doubt you will like this oatmeal. It is a step away from your traditional oatmeal and is more than unique. Feeling like a little sweet fall flavor in your life? You DO NOT wan’t to miss their Pumpkin Cheesecake. It is creamy, pumpkiny and on top of some a brownie walnut crust.  The chocolate and the pumpkin together makes for a combination that will leave you begging for more.

Fed by Dallas for 1 Year: Meals I’ve Eaten and Loved

So, it has been one year since Feed Me Dallas was born. It has been a year full of great food, not so great food and of course that food that isn’t so great but you still love. In honor of this one year mark, I’ve decided to give you a list of some of my favorite things i’ve consumed over the past year. Each and every one of these items has changed my life for the better, contributed to my happiness and propelled my food obsession into something that may or may not be healthy. Enjoy and hope you don’t get too full! :)

1. Best Pizza-

Cane Rosso- I really am not a fan of pizza, but I must admit this pizza is pretty darn good. The Delia with fresh mozzarella, grape tomatoes, arugula,  and spicy bacon marmalade is my favorite.  Also, the one thing you can’t miss at Cane Rosso is the S’mores Calzone, a delicious pizza dough pocket filled with chocolate and marshmallows. Who knew something could be sooo good.

2. Best Custard-

Wild About Harry’s- I often found myself running towards this guilty pleasure during lunch breaks, Friday nights and especially Sundays. It was the perfect pick-me up.  My strange taste buds loved a combination of the peppermint and coconut with hot fudge on top, obviously. P.S. I don’t have any pictures because I am not patient enough to wait for my camera to load before I eat it. :)

3. Best Desert-

Oak- The deserts at Oak gave me a new found appreciation for the fine art of pastry making. Each bite of the Peach Rhubarb was flaky, the ice creams were to die for and the chocolate in the Chocolate Panna Cotta was so creamy and delicious it melted in your mouth.

4. Best Meal-

Driftwood- My meal at Driftwood may have been the most memorable meal of a lifetime. I’ve never left a restaurant so happy and enjoyed the atmosphere and food so much.  The portion sizes were perfect, the menu items were creative and the service was great. And did I mention, there dessert rocked!

5. Best Cheese Dish-

Javiers- I love cheese. I also love tortillas. Javier’s puts cheese and tortillas together in their Cheese Panela, so therefore Javier’s has the best cheese dish in Dallas.

6. Best Atmosphere-

Oddfellows- The atmosphere at Oddfellows is cozy and light. The room is comfortable and the people who dine and work there are friendly. It is beautifully decorated and reminds me of a cozy country house. The coffee bar with seating outside is adorable.

7. Best Coffee and Breakfast Sandwich Combo-

White Rock Coffee - Their breakfast sandwich brightens up my Saturday morning and their coffee is some of the best tasting coffee I’ve ever had. (And I’ve had ALOT of coffee.)

8. Best Fast Food Desert-

Bubba’s Banana Pudding- I must admit, I love this stuff so much I snuck it into the movie theater in my purse. oopsies. Sorry i’m not sorry.

10. Go To Lunch Place-

Southpaws- I love every single item on the menu at Southpaws and I think I must have tried a variation of nearly all of them.  However, I always found my self building my own wrap (turkey, avocado, cheese, tomatoes, spinach, hummus and vinegar-toasted) and always wanting more at the end even though I was so incredibly stuffed I couldn’t breathe.  If you haven’t, try the apples and peanut butter with agave nectar for an afternoon snack or their hummus.

11. Favorite Frozen Yogurt-

Yummilicious is too close to my house. I am sad they got rid of coconut, but avocado, cake batter and sugar free chocolate are yummi-delicious. Put some mochi on that fro-yo and you will find yourself floating on cloud 9. :)

12. Best Granola-

Oddfellows- Their granola is full of honey covered grains.  It is crunchy soft at the same time and each bite will leave you begging for more.

13. Favorite Dive Bar-

Adairs- Red plays at Adairs every Wednesday night and seeing him play were probably some of my favorite nights over the past year. He plays classic country tunes in his denim from head to toe. Hungry? Try their burger.

14. Best Brunch-

The Grape- You probably already know this, but The Grape has the best brunch in Dallas. My favorite menu item is The Haystack. A stack of eggs, avocado, roesti potatoes, grilled tomatoes, muenster cheese and sriracha. Yeah, you probably didn’t know that one dish could consist of all the perfect ingredients, be original and be served for brunch (one of the most generic meal times to ever be introduced to dining). Their dinner is amazing too, if you haven’t tried it you must.

15. Best Sushi

Nobu- duh. A must try at Nobu is the Rare Grilled Toro with Yuzu Miso & Jalapeno Salsa. It is spicy, but perfectly balanced with the miso. YUM.

16. Best Burger-

Becks Prime- Sorry it’s the Houston in me, but Becks Prime makes me so happy I could cry. Now, i’m not much of a red meat eater so I get their chicken burger and it is to die for. The wheat bun is so tasty and blends perfectly with the mayo and marinated chicken. The burger is thick, juicy and the meat tastes so delicious it melts in your mouth. Don’t miss their chocolate malt! It is thick and creamy and has the perfect amount of malt flavoring.

17. Most Refreshing Afternoon Snack-

TC’s Shaved Ice- The wedding cake shaved ice with cream ice is the best, but I just don’t think you can go wrong with TC’s. It is refreshing on a hot summer day and that perfect sweet treat for the afternoon.

18. Best Pancackes

Legal Grounds- The Prom cake at Legal Grounds changed my life.  It is an oatmeal pancake, filled with bananas and topped with granola. The granola adds the perfect crunch and the batter has the perfect amount of oatmeal.

19. Best Tacos-

Velvet Taco- Try the number 15, cornmeal fried oyster with remoulade, pico, smoked chili butter and a napa fennel radish shred.  The oysters are fried but not too fried and the remoulade, pico and chili butter accentuate the flavor of the oyster and its delicious fried batter.

20. Best Ladies Lunch

Forty Five Ten T Room- The T Room is the perfect place for a ladies lunch and their menu items are absolutely delicious.  Their tuna melt is the best i’ve ever had on toasted poppy seed bread with the perfect amount of avocado, cheese and tuna.  The pecan crusted chicken salad is amazing.  The chicken is tender and the crust created from the pecans is crispy, but not too crispy.
