Alligator Cafe

Ever crave good, authentic cajun food? Want to know where to find it? Here is your answer– Alligator Cafe in Casa Linda off of Garland Road.  This authentic cajun restaurant offers all the traditional New Orleans starters spiced and fried to perfection. The fried pickles, fried green tomatoes and boudin balls are the perfect way to start a meal and get you excited for the delicious cajun goodness to come.  Just dip those babies in a little Remoulade sauce and you will be good to go.

Then its on to a cup of  their gumbo. Take a second to appreciate this cup of gumbo goodness and admire the hunks of all of your favorite gumbo ingredients- bay leaves, celery, onion, okra, bell pepper in the dark slow cooked roux. Then realize- this might be one of the best gumbos in town.

Looking for some fried seafood? Don’t worry, they’ve got it. The only problem you might have is deciding what to order.  From alligator tail to crawfish tail to of course catfish and oysters, the Alligator Cafe has all the traditional favorites.  What about some Etouffee or a Po boy? Or even better get the best of both worlds with some Atchafalaya- a piece of blacked or fried catfish topped with crawfish or shrimp etouffee on top of a bed of white rice.

And of course you can’t end a meal like this without dessert.  All I can say is save some room for one of the biggest pieces of bread pudding you will ever see and some banana pudding that will knock your socks off. Take it from me- Alligator Cafe is a place that you have to try if you haven’t yet had the chance.

Fed by Dallas for 1 Year: Meals I’ve Eaten and Loved

So, it has been one year since Feed Me Dallas was born. It has been a year full of great food, not so great food and of course that food that isn’t so great but you still love. In honor of this one year mark, I’ve decided to give you a list of some of my favorite things i’ve consumed over the past year. Each and every one of these items has changed my life for the better, contributed to my happiness and propelled my food obsession into something that may or may not be healthy. Enjoy and hope you don’t get too full! :)

1. Best Pizza-

Cane Rosso- I really am not a fan of pizza, but I must admit this pizza is pretty darn good. The Delia with fresh mozzarella, grape tomatoes, arugula,  and spicy bacon marmalade is my favorite.  Also, the one thing you can’t miss at Cane Rosso is the S’mores Calzone, a delicious pizza dough pocket filled with chocolate and marshmallows. Who knew something could be sooo good.

2. Best Custard-

Wild About Harry’s- I often found myself running towards this guilty pleasure during lunch breaks, Friday nights and especially Sundays. It was the perfect pick-me up.  My strange taste buds loved a combination of the peppermint and coconut with hot fudge on top, obviously. P.S. I don’t have any pictures because I am not patient enough to wait for my camera to load before I eat it. :)

3. Best Desert-

Oak- The deserts at Oak gave me a new found appreciation for the fine art of pastry making. Each bite of the Peach Rhubarb was flaky, the ice creams were to die for and the chocolate in the Chocolate Panna Cotta was so creamy and delicious it melted in your mouth.

4. Best Meal-

Driftwood- My meal at Driftwood may have been the most memorable meal of a lifetime. I’ve never left a restaurant so happy and enjoyed the atmosphere and food so much.  The portion sizes were perfect, the menu items were creative and the service was great. And did I mention, there dessert rocked!

5. Best Cheese Dish-

Javiers- I love cheese. I also love tortillas. Javier’s puts cheese and tortillas together in their Cheese Panela, so therefore Javier’s has the best cheese dish in Dallas.

6. Best Atmosphere-

Oddfellows- The atmosphere at Oddfellows is cozy and light. The room is comfortable and the people who dine and work there are friendly. It is beautifully decorated and reminds me of a cozy country house. The coffee bar with seating outside is adorable.

7. Best Coffee and Breakfast Sandwich Combo-

White Rock Coffee - Their breakfast sandwich brightens up my Saturday morning and their coffee is some of the best tasting coffee I’ve ever had. (And I’ve had ALOT of coffee.)

8. Best Fast Food Desert-

Bubba’s Banana Pudding- I must admit, I love this stuff so much I snuck it into the movie theater in my purse. oopsies. Sorry i’m not sorry.

10. Go To Lunch Place-

Southpaws- I love every single item on the menu at Southpaws and I think I must have tried a variation of nearly all of them.  However, I always found my self building my own wrap (turkey, avocado, cheese, tomatoes, spinach, hummus and vinegar-toasted) and always wanting more at the end even though I was so incredibly stuffed I couldn’t breathe.  If you haven’t, try the apples and peanut butter with agave nectar for an afternoon snack or their hummus.

11. Favorite Frozen Yogurt-

Yummilicious is too close to my house. I am sad they got rid of coconut, but avocado, cake batter and sugar free chocolate are yummi-delicious. Put some mochi on that fro-yo and you will find yourself floating on cloud 9. :)

12. Best Granola-

Oddfellows- Their granola is full of honey covered grains.  It is crunchy soft at the same time and each bite will leave you begging for more.

13. Favorite Dive Bar-

Adairs- Red plays at Adairs every Wednesday night and seeing him play were probably some of my favorite nights over the past year. He plays classic country tunes in his denim from head to toe. Hungry? Try their burger.

14. Best Brunch-

The Grape- You probably already know this, but The Grape has the best brunch in Dallas. My favorite menu item is The Haystack. A stack of eggs, avocado, roesti potatoes, grilled tomatoes, muenster cheese and sriracha. Yeah, you probably didn’t know that one dish could consist of all the perfect ingredients, be original and be served for brunch (one of the most generic meal times to ever be introduced to dining). Their dinner is amazing too, if you haven’t tried it you must.

15. Best Sushi

Nobu- duh. A must try at Nobu is the Rare Grilled Toro with Yuzu Miso & Jalapeno Salsa. It is spicy, but perfectly balanced with the miso. YUM.

16. Best Burger-

Becks Prime- Sorry it’s the Houston in me, but Becks Prime makes me so happy I could cry. Now, i’m not much of a red meat eater so I get their chicken burger and it is to die for. The wheat bun is so tasty and blends perfectly with the mayo and marinated chicken. The burger is thick, juicy and the meat tastes so delicious it melts in your mouth. Don’t miss their chocolate malt! It is thick and creamy and has the perfect amount of malt flavoring.

17. Most Refreshing Afternoon Snack-

TC’s Shaved Ice- The wedding cake shaved ice with cream ice is the best, but I just don’t think you can go wrong with TC’s. It is refreshing on a hot summer day and that perfect sweet treat for the afternoon.

18. Best Pancackes

Legal Grounds- The Prom cake at Legal Grounds changed my life.  It is an oatmeal pancake, filled with bananas and topped with granola. The granola adds the perfect crunch and the batter has the perfect amount of oatmeal.

19. Best Tacos-

Velvet Taco- Try the number 15, cornmeal fried oyster with remoulade, pico, smoked chili butter and a napa fennel radish shred.  The oysters are fried but not too fried and the remoulade, pico and chili butter accentuate the flavor of the oyster and its delicious fried batter.

20. Best Ladies Lunch

Forty Five Ten T Room- The T Room is the perfect place for a ladies lunch and their menu items are absolutely delicious.  Their tuna melt is the best i’ve ever had on toasted poppy seed bread with the perfect amount of avocado, cheese and tuna.  The pecan crusted chicken salad is amazing.  The chicken is tender and the crust created from the pecans is crispy, but not too crispy.
