Max’s Wine Dive

Fried Chicken and Champagne. I know you’ve heard the phrase before, but Max’s Wine Dive on McKinney Avenue is way more than just fried chicken and champagne. Now I’ve been to Max’s multiple times and must say that each time it has been great. From the scallops to the cauliflower, I’ve loved it all.  The first time I went it was obviously for the fried chicken and boy was it good.  You are probably thinking, what is so special about Max’s fried chicken? Well, its all in the batter and Max’s batter is just a little different from all the rest.  It is a little bit spicy and very distinct.  Served with mashed potatoes, Texas toast and my favorite, collard greens, it is your traditional southern meal.

Now, onto what makes Max’s more than just a place for fried chicken and champagne., their brunch. And with their new brunch menu Chef Patrick has definitely out done himself. From the cinnamon rolls to the Hangover pot pie, each item has a twist that makes it a little different than your typical egg dish brunch.  Typically I find when you go somewhere to brunch they have a few options, Eggs Benedict, omelet, Eggs Benedict with some sort of seafood, etc… Well you will not find this at Max’s.  Treat yourself and start with their house-made cinnamon rolls and then get ready to feast.

Want an omelet? Try the goat cheese & wild mushroom omlete with cheese, jalapeno grits.  Or what about the Hangover Pot Pie? A pot pie big enough to feed an army filled with over easy eggs, collard greens (you know how I feel about these), homefries, cream sauce, provolone cheese and obviously BACON. I mean everything you could ever want or need for breakfast in the form of a flaky, delicious pot pie. Yes, please.

Feeling a little more like lunch? Get the fried egg sandwich. As a huge proponent of the fried egg sandwich, this one is top notch.  It is filled with two over easy eggs, applewood bacon, grueyere cheese and truffle oil.  The egg sopped into the perfectly toasted cheesy bread and lettuce and tomato all I can say is— this is what dreams are made out of.

Peak & Elm

As soon as I heard that Peak & Elm was opening, I knew it was going to be love. Want to know why? 1. because La Popular tamales are so darn good and 2. they serve barbacoa, one of my favorite things since childhood. So it became my mission to try Peak & Elm as soon as I possibly could, it was all I talked about and read about until I could get myself over there.  It finally happened one Sunday morning when we made our way over for brunch.  The little spot in East Dallas is quaint and inviting with the drive in like sign hanging above the door. We quickly sat down ordered our coffee and food, as the Sunday morning hunger pains were setting in and we were in dire need of something delicious- and boy were we satisfied.  One thing you need to know if you are going to brunch at Peak & Elm is that their coffee is out of this world. It tasted like bold, caffeinated hot chocolate. I found myself constantly talking about how amazing the coffee was throughout our meal.

I ordered the East Dallas Omelette made of egg whites (my request) and garden fresh veggies with a side of potatoes and barbacoa. The barbacoa was tender, perfectly salty and down-right delicious.  As I wrapped it up in tiny little bites with the thick, dense, floury tortilla, I cherished every bite and watched it slowly dwindle away. All the while I was thinking, I am going to be very sad when this is over and I was. That is how you know a meal was good– when sadness ensues at the end.

Then there were the beans. I wish I had gotten a picture but often times find that presentation is destroyed before I am able to capture a photograph, especially when the food is this good. These beans were AMAZING. I know you are probably thinking how good can beans be, well obviously you haven’t had good beans.  These ones take the cake. They were a little bit spicy and the first thing that popped to my head as I took a bite was slow cooked. Think about it.

A few more things on their brunch menu that I want to try are the Menudo and the Chilaquiles. Try it for yourself, you will not be disappointed with Peak & Elm, brought to you by the founders of La Popular.

Boulevardier

Have you ever just walked in a restaurant and thought to yourself…this is going to be good..? Well, that is exactly what went through our minds as we entered this quaint, french-inspired bistro.

The Boulevardier, located in Bishop Arts, welcomes you with every aspect of the decor from the yellow painted brick to the staff dressed in their matching plaid, each accent is well-thought out and contributes to the inevitably enjoyable experience.

We sat down for brunch and torn as to what we should order. Each item looked as if it would melt in your mouth and we didn’t want to choose just one…so we didn’t. Whether it was the huckleberry sauce mixed with the duck leg and eggs and fried corn grits, or the perfection they call french toast, each bite was better than the last. A meal this delicious deserves a bite by bite breakdown and description, so here you go…

Legs and Eggs- a duck leg, served with the skin crispy, a top a bed of greens and a huckleberry sauce.  On the side, two fried corn grits cakes topped with sunny side up duck eggs. Once the egg yolk was broken on top the three items were perfect for mixing into a concoction of legs and eggs love.

French Toast- two pieces of deliciously soaked bread, with what seemed to be a bit of peanut butter mixed in, topped with cinnamon toast brittle and Grand Marnier. It was light and not too sugary. It is a french toast that could satisfy even those without the sweetest of teeth.

Beef Tongue Hash-  beef tongue, peppadew peppers, cramelized onions, poached eggs, hollandaise.  The eggs were perfectly poached and the beef tounge full of flavor.

The Standard Pour: Cravings Kitchen

When you think food served at a bar, you automatically think- bar-food i.e. greasy, cheesy, heavy goodness- most likely in the form of pizza, cheese fries, chicken tenders etc. Well, The Standard Pour has set forth to change your notion of typical bar food with Chef Peja’s newest creations to come from the Cravings Kitchen.

Here is the deal. They still offer all those greasy favorites including Fried Chicken, a Philly Cheese Steak and a Burger, but have added some fancier items to the menu like Street Corn, Chicken Risotto Croquettes, Lobster Nachos and Lamb Ravioli. If there is one thing I can say about the food at The Standard Pour, it is that it gets an A+ for presentation. Each dish brought to us was designed like a piece of art. Hence the Ahi Tuna Sausage with pickled mustard seeds to the right.

The Street Corn was by far my favorite dish. It was warm and filled with the perfect amount of bacon, creme fraiche, tomato and cilantro.  Each bite was wonderful, as we scooped the delicious corn out onto the fresh, warm, crispy chips that crumbled in your mouth. I also was more than pleasantly surprised by the Chicken Risotto Croquettes, little round balls of jack cheese risotto surrounded by chicken and lightly fried.  These little bite size morsels weren’t too big, but weren’t too small–allowing for the perfect combination of culinary goodness and eliminating that problem of too much fried batter. So next time you are looking for good food and a good bar, I would definitely recommend The Standard Pour.

Cafe Brazil

Recently, I sampled Cafe Brazil‘s fall menu and was pleasantly surprised, as my taste buds were flooded with the taste of pumpkin pancakes and cheesecake, holiday brew coffee and the blend of savory & spicy, in their Cranberry-Jalapeno Chutney Pork Chop.  Yeah! You heard me a pork chop! It was great! The sauce was sweet and spicy, the pork was perfectly cooked and the fried sweet potatoes on the side were perfectly cooked and the perfect item to dip in the leftover sauce.

These famous fall favorites at Cafe Brazil are famous for a reason and eating is believing when you step into one of their many locations around Dallas. Now I had never been to Cafe Brazil before, but obviously had heard rantings and ravings about their cinnamon-pumpkin pancakes so my expectations were high. Well, these babies were definitely worth the compliments, they were fluffy, full of cinnamon and pumpkin flavor (but not too full) and covered with the most delicious cinnamon-butter.  One of their other seasonal items featured is the Chai Oatmeal, it tasted like a blend between a chai tea latte and oatmeal. If you like those two items, there is no doubt you will like this oatmeal. It is a step away from your traditional oatmeal and is more than unique. Feeling like a little sweet fall flavor in your life? You DO NOT wan’t to miss their Pumpkin Cheesecake. It is creamy, pumpkiny and on top of some a brownie walnut crust.  The chocolate and the pumpkin together makes for a combination that will leave you begging for more.
